AI Search in Manufacturing: Where Inquiries Come From in 2026

The idea of a buyer or engineer typing a complex requirement into a chat window and ending up sending an inquiry for a machine in the six-figure euro range is no longer science fiction in 2026. What we see in our client projects is clear: this shift is already here in manufacturing.

We do online marketing exclusively for manufacturing and industrial companies. These insights aren’t theoretical trends. They come from our client projects: tracking data and feedback from our clients’ sales teams.

The new reality: inquiries for €100,000 machines through ChatGPT and other AI tools

This isn’t an experiment anymore. Manufacturers are already winning real inquiries through tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot (as of April 2026). And we’re not talking about simple commodity parts, but about high-priced capital equipment in the six-figure range.

How do we know? Reliable tracking and direct feedback from sales teams. In sales conversations, our clients hear one sentence more and more often: “We found you through ChatGPT.” If you ignore AI search, you’re handing these high-value leads to your competitors.

Google vs. AI: where are inquiries really coming from today?

Despite the rapid rise of AI tools, what we see is clear: Google is still the most important channel, followed by Bing. Most trackable inquiries can still be traced back to traditional search, both organic and through Google Ads.

That said, the lines are blurring. Google itself has long since turned into an AI engine. With AI Overviews, traditional search with its ten blue links is changing anyway. Buyers in manufacturing still need the same information. How they find it is changing.

The power of precision: why keyword strategies still deliver

Working with specific keywords remains an important anchor for your marketing strategy. In our clients’ accounts, Google Ads campaigns with exact match keywords still perform as well as before.

As long as your audience still types its problems into search boxes, this route stays highly efficient. A solid Google strategy isn’t an obstacle to the AI future. It’s the foundation you need. It keeps inquiries coming in now, while you prepare for the new era of AI search.

The synergy: combining SEO and AI optimization

The most interesting thing we see in our projects is how SEO and AI interact. It isn’t either-or. In our projects, companies that rank well in traditional search are usually also among the suppliers AI tools name when a user enters specific requirements.

There’s one key difference to keep in mind:

  • AI citations: If your link only shows up as a small footnote in an AI answer, hardly anyone clicks it. For Google’s AI summaries, the Pew Research Center (US, July 2025) found that users clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. Overall, users who saw an AI summary clicked on a result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was none (source). That has little business impact.
  • AI shortlists: When AI compiles a list of potential suppliers for a specific problem, you want to be at the top.

We’ve found that if you optimize your content so AI tools understand it better, you benefit twice. This optimization often leads to major improvements in organic rankings in regular Google search. Take advantage of that double benefit.

International outlook: a universal trend

We’re often asked whether these developments only affect the German market. The answer is a clear no. Since many of our clients sell worldwide, we see very similar patterns across markets.

Whether in the US, Europe or other international markets, the mechanics of AI search and user behavior are much the same. The only notable exception is China, where local platforms dominate. The mechanics are the same across markets. Which markets are worth entering is a separate question: it depends on your setup, your sales network and your competition (how we approach international SEO).

Get ahead while others wait

The shift in B2B marketing is well underway. It isn’t happening overnight. It’s happening steadily. Customers search through AI, find suppliers and send inquiries.

If you act now and build a dual strategy of traditional search and targeted AI search optimization, you can build a real competitive advantage. While most manufacturers are still watching, you can already claim the visibility that will decide who wins orders over the next few years. Make SEO and AI work together, and you improve your chances of being named first, by people and algorithms alike.
